Pitbull Attacks Smaller Dog

Los Angeles: A vicious pitbull attacking a smaller dog was shot today by an officer, after he also attacked a city worker.

On July 5, 2007, at about 9:00 a.m., Newton patrol officers responded to a radio call "Vicious Dog" in the 900 block of East 51st Street. When the officers arrived they saw the pitbull with its teeth around the neck of the smaller dog.  It appeared to onlookers and the officers that the pitbull was going to kill the smaller dog.  Citizens were attempting to separate the dogs by using sticks, but were unsuccessful.

The officers used a fire extinguisher and also sprayed the dogs with chemical spray but both did not have any effect on the pit bull.  Officer's feared that if the pit bull got loose that it would attack anyone of the many on lookers.  Police Officer Steven Crane with over 24 years with the department shot the pit bull once.  The pit bull immediately stopped and attempted to walk away but collapsed.  The injured small dog was taken by Animal Regulations and its condition is unknown.

The owners of the dogs have not been determined.

Newton Area Detectives are conducting the investigation.

General question: does anyone suppose the rise in dog aggression this week might have something to do with their feed? But perhaps I am suffering from watching too much las Noticias, which has now become las Novelas...thanks to the wife of one creepy polititian and the psycho girlfriend of another...

The Police Commission requires the Department to do news releases on every categorical use of force, and that includes OIS's involving animals.
