November 5, 2009 – In a press conference held outside the new Police Administration Building, City Controller Wendy Greuel announced her findings on a follow-up audit on the Forensic DNA Backlog Reduction Grant Program, which evaluates the Department’s progress in implementing the previous audit’s recommendations.
Controller Greuel praised the Department for “significant progress” and for ensuring that no kit went untested this year beyond the legal limit but cautioned “we still have a long way to go to resolve this issue.”
The audit found the Department has reduced the backlog of untested DNA evidence kits from rapes and assaults by two-thirds since last fall. According to Department statistics, the current back-log of cases stands at 2,527, down from the original 7,038 kits. Chief-designate Charlie Beck said eliminating the backlog by the summer of 2011 is one of his top priorities.
