Police Commission President Steve Soboroff opened the meeting by pointing out that today’s meeting would be the last one before the election of officers, which is scheduled for the next commission meeting on August 12. He also talked about the reappointment process for Chief Beck’s position, including the reception of many public comments covering a full spectrum of viewpoints on the topic. He offered assurance that the process was moving along well and would be completed in a timely manner.
The meeting continued with the Report of the Chief of Police. Chief Charlie Beck began his report by echoing some of what Commissioner Soboroff said regarding the reappointment process. He went on to express confidence he would be exonerated from some current allegations against him in reference to a possible reappointment, and he shared a great concern about members of his immediate family being subjected to similar scrutiny without deserving such treatment. Chief Beck closed his report with a rundown of current crime statistics.
Commissioner Soboroff asked Chief Beck to briefly talk about National Night Out, an annual City event featuring many different kinds of special activities in all divisions.
