Chief Beck reported there was an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) in Wilmington on the afternoon of February 2, 2018. Uniformed officers assigned to Harbor Are Gang Enforcement Detail attempted to make a traffic stop on a reckless driver. Suspect failed to yield, a brief pursuit ensued, and the suspect’s vehicle was involved in a traffic collision. As officers exited their vehicle, suspect pointed a semi-automatic handgun at officers that resulted in an OIS.
Shortly after midnight on Thursday February 1, 2018, LAFD and LAPD resources responded to a Home Depot parking lot in Northeast Division where a large suitcase was lit on fire. The large suitcase was opened and inside were dismembered body parts. Robbery Homicide Division (RHD) responded and after their investigation, which included surveillance video from the MTA,
arrested the suspect on Friday February 2, 2018. Investigators have not yet identified the victim. Chief Beck thanked RHD for their dedication, enthusiasm, and strong effort in solving the most difficult of cases.
At the request of the Department of Justice, the LAPD is hosting the 4th Annual Crime Fighters Conference. Sixty law enforcement professionals from a dozen police departments are gathering to discuss crime fighting strategies and community initiatives. Chief Beck reported there are 10,048 sworn officers are on active duty, 2,906 civilians, about 400 reserve officers, and 1,850 cadets.
