Los Angeles Police Department Statement on Officer Involved Dog Shooting

Hollywood: In the early hours of Saturday, March 24th, Hollywood officers were called to the 5800 block of Willoughby Avenue for reports of shots being fired. When they arrived, a citizen advised officers of the location of possible suspects, directing them to the apartment building. The officers responded to the location to further the investigation.

As the officers were clearing the residence, one of the officers was confronted by an aggressive pit bull. Fearing for his safety the officer fired one shot at the dog to stop him from biting. The dog ran to an adjoining room, only to return moments later and attempted to bite the officer. The dog stopped and ran to the bathroom where it was secured pending the arrival of Department of Animal Regulations.

The Animal Regulation officer responded to the scene who transported the dog to a local City Shelter veterinarian for treatment where he is said to be recovering. The veterinarian commented that treating dog has been difficult as he is showing signs of aggression to caregivers. No officers or other members of the public were injured during this incident. Our Force Investigation Division detectives are still interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence as this investigation continues.
