Notes from the June 5, 2018 Weekly Police Commission Meeting

 

Commissioner President Steve Soboroff opened the meeting and a quorum was established. President Steve Soboroff made a short statement on Mayor Eric Garcetti’s selection of the next chief of police of the LAPD saying it was excellent. All Consent Agenda items were unanimously approved.

Department’s presentation and discussion relative to the 2017 Use of Force Year-End Review Report, as set forth. No action required. This item will be placed on agenda in two weeks for additional questions and comments.

Department’s report, dated May 29, 2018, relative to the Inmate Welfare Fund Audit (AD No. 17-015), as set forth. [BPC #18-0176] was approved.

Department’s report, dated May 29, 2018, relative to the Operations-West Bureau Detective Command Accountability Performance Audit (AD No. 17-012), as set forth. [BPC #18-0177] was approved.

Department’s report, dated May 29, 2018, relative to the Asset Forfeiture Audit (AD No. 17-017), as set forth.  [BPC #18-0178] was approved.

The Report of the Chief of Police was given by Deputy Chief Jon Peters. Chief Peters reported on an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred on Tuesday May 29. Uniformed officers reported to a stabbing radio call where the suspect prevented officers access to the stabbing victim. The suspect refused to comply to the officers’ commands. After numerous attempts to communicate with the suspect, officers deployed tazers, beanbag shotguns, and two 40mm sponge rounds. The suspect armed himself with a pick axe and charged at officers resulting in an OIS. Chief Peters provided an updated on Part IA crime statistics. Chief Peters reported there are 10,035 sworn personnel, 2,939 civilian personnel, over 400 reserve officers, 259 specialists and almost 1,799 cadets.
