LAPD Mourns Loss of Veteran SWAT Officer

News Conference SWAT_Ofcr.MP3

Simmonsrandy Shortly, after 9:00 last night, the Los Angeles Police Department's Communications Division received a 911 call from a home in West Valley in the 19000 block of Welby Way.  The caller indicated he had killed 3 of his family members.  West Valley Patrol Units responded to conduct an investigation.

The suspect refused to leave the home and LAPD SWAT was called to the scene.

Swat_014 Around 12:30 this morning, SWAT made entry into the home and an exchange of gunfire between the officers and the suspect occurred.  Two veteran SWAT officers were shot, removed from the home and rushed to Northridge Medical Center.  The incident at the home in West Valley is still ongoing, and for that reason there will be no more tactical information released at this time.

Despite the efforts of the Los Angeles Fire Department and hospital personnel, one of the officers passed away just after one'clock this morning.  The other officer was seriously wounded but will survive.  The names of the officers will not beSwat_016 released until all of their family members have been notified.

The members of the Los Angeles Police Department are deeply saddened this morning having lost a member of their family.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of these two brave officers.  Both have served this city for more than 25-years and have been a part of SWAT for 20 of those years.

Swat_018 The concept of SWAT originated in the late 1960s, and became fully operational in 1971 when personnel were assigned on a full-time basis to Metropolitan Division.  Until this morning, no SWAT officer had been killed in the line of duty despite thousands of incidents this elite unit has responded to in thirty plus years.  The only other SWAT Officer to have died on duty was Officer Lou Villalobos, who died during a training accident in March 2000.

Lieutenant Ruben De La Torre

Are thoughts and prays are with you and all the policemen families. God Bless you.

It's really sad that it takes such a horrible tragedy for us to realize and truly appreciate the sacrifices made by these courageous officers. It is an honor to be served by such selfless and dedicated men. May our hearts and prayers comfort their families at this very difficult time.

My thoughts go out to the families of these 2 officers who placed themselves in harms way to protect our friends, family, and neighbors... and my prayers for the children of Officer Simmons who lost their father today...

I would like to put a call out to all residents to line the streets during the funeral percession to show our support for our men in Blue and to let the criminals of our communities know we are no longer going to put up with this type of behavior... So when the plans are made and the funeral route is posted come out everyone and show support...

Hi i first want to send my regards to the Family members of the Two Swat Officers who very bravely gave their lives to not only serve but also pertect the communities through out the Los Angels area. I know it is a great Loss to the Department and also to the City of Los Angeles

Terrible Loss! Officer Simmons Rest in peace. You will never be forgotten.

Officer Veenstra, wish you a healthy and speedy recovery! We are with you.

I am just sickened to hear of your loss of such a fine Officer and the wounding of another. My 25 year Roseville MN Police Officer husband just retired the 1st of Jan, 2008. I know the danger faced daily, and the commitment each officer makes!! The Lord said "blessed are the peacemaker for they shall inherit the kingdom of heaven.". My heartfelt prayers goes out to the officers families, and to your department for safety, protection and peace in your hearts. God bless each and every one of you!!!

My heart and prayers are with the family of our fallen officer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with both officer's families and to the LAPD.

To the Families of officers Randy Simmons and Jim Veenstra, the LAPD and the City of Los Angeles,Our thoughts and prayers are with you in the loss of such an outstanding officer and the injury of another. May the the Lord comfort you and help you heal.God bless you all

This is terrible news. I went to high school with officer Simmons. He and my brother played football on the team. He was a fine young man. My heart-felt sympathy goes out to his family members and the L.A. Police Department for their loss.

Words fail. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I care. Your lives matter to me, every one. I pray for protection for the Simmons family and for LAPD as they mourn. I pray for a speedy recovery for Jim Venestra, and strength and courage for LAPD SWAT and their families in the days, weeks and months to come.

My condolences go out to the Simmons’ Family as well as to his extended LAPD family and to his many friends. Rest In Peace Randy.

My family and I want to relay our deepest sorrow for Officer Simmons and his family. We also want to relay our deepest heartfelt hope for Officer Veenstra and his family. As an officer who has been shot in the line of duty, it is always tough and hits close to home when I hear about these horrible events. If at all possible please pass this along to both families, that my wife and I will be praying for them during this difficult and trying time.

My hearts and prayers go out to both families in this horrible time. I also feel the pain of their loss and that of the teams having recently lost an officer during a SWAT operation myself. I have nothing but sincere condolences to offer and sympathize with how badly all are hurting. If there is anything the Rialto Police Department can ever do do not hesitate to ask.

Our deepest condolences to the members of the LAPD on your loss.
You have our thoughts and prayers for the injured officer and the families of both officers killed and injured protecting the citizens of Los Angeles.

To all former and current LAPD officers,

I am sorry about Randy. I'll pray for his family and for those who had the honor to meet and know him.

Jim, I hope and pray for your speedy recovery.

To "D" team, thanks for the resolution.

From what I've read, he has lived a life worthy of being called a HERO. I wish his family peace during this most difficult time. May God Bless him and all those his life touched.

My prayers go out to both officers and thier families. My God watch over you and give you the strength needed to heal. There are no words to heal only time. I'm so very sorry that this happened. We take for granted the the job that each of these Officer Simmons did and that which Officer Veenstra will come back to. Thank you seems so small a word right now. God speed.

Our prayers and heartfelt sympathies go out to these officers, their families, and to the entire LAPD -- for their brave and selfless work and ultimate sacrifice. May God bless, protect, and comfort you during this difficult period.

Reading these comments truly toughes my heart. As the wife of a an LAPD officer, I constantly see and hear the negative attitudes that are displayed towards the police so often in the public and media. What people don't seem to realize is that the officers put their lives on the line in situations like these every minute of every day, and often that sacrifice is taken for granted by many. It is sad that it takes a tragedy like this to make people realize how heroic their efforts truly are. My heart aches for the family members that are left to go on without such an integral part of their family. They are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you to everyone who honors the work that these men and women dedicate their lives to.

On behalf of the City of Pittsburgh S.W.A.T team and our families we hold our thoughts and prayers for both of the officer's families and to the LAPD. God bless all of you.

Thank you so much for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers. I am overwhelmed by the comments. May God bless you and keep you.
