Notes from the March 3, 2009 Weekly Police Commission Meeting

• Police Commission Vice President John Mack expressed his sorrow on behalf of the Commission over the untimely passing of Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner.  He said the Deputy Chief was highly respected, not only in the Department, but in the community as well.  Those sentiments were echoed by his fellow Police Commissioners. 

• Police Chief William Bratton also spoke on the passing of Deputy Chief Garner.  He offered his recollection of promoting Chief Garner through the ranks and said he would be sorely missed.  He added that the funeral services were being finalized and will be formally announced later this afternoon.

• The Department’s report, dated February 19, 2009, relative to the Recommendation for the Medal of Valor was approved.  Police Commission Vice President John Mack announced this year’s ceremony will be held on May 28, 2009, in the Grand Ballroom at the Hollywood and Highland Entertainment Complex.  Commissioner Alan Skobin added the Commission will be voting on presenting the Department’s highest honor to 16 individuals who displayed bravery and courage above and beyond the normal call of duty.

• The Executive Director’s report, dated February 25, 2009, relative to the Review and Transmittal of the Proposed Request for Proposal for the Hollenbeck Area Standard Duty Towing & Storage Services Official Police Garage Contract 09-980-003, was approved and transmitted to the Mayor and City Council.
