Podcast Chief Beck collaborates with ICAN

Thursday April 29, 2010-Chief Charlie Beck joined Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and several Los Angeles County members to discuss the release of their annual child abuse and neglect report.  ICAN, which stands for Inter-Agency on Child Abuse and Neglect, was established in 1977 by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as the official county agency to coordinate the development of services for the prevention, identification and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

Chief Beck discussed the importance of agencies working together to protect the young and vulnerable.  He stated, “There is a lot of things you can do as a cop but when you have to handle a child abuse case, that is the most difficult thing you can do.  For too long, children fell through the cracks and now through ICAN can we better serve our children of today.”

ICAN produces two annual reports, The ICAN Child Death Review Team Report, and The State of Child Abuse and Neglect in Los Angeles County. In addition, thirteen community based inter-disciplinary child abuse councils interface with ICAN and provide valuable information and community based efforts regarding child abuse related issues.  The news conference was held in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion located in Los Angeles.
