Notes from the November 8, 2011 Weekly Police Commission Meeting

Police Commission Vice President John Mack attended a training and education seminar put on by the National Black Police Association – Western Region with Commission President Richard Drooyan.  He said it was well attended and a very nice event.

Police Commissioner Robert Saltzman praised the Department for the positive relationship fostered with the leaders of the Occupy LA movement. 

Police Chief Charlie Beck stated the Department has had a continued dialog with the leadership of Occupy LA over the last several weeks and believes their first amendment message is sustainable. Chief Beck also stated he was proud of the work Robbery Homicide Division did in regards to the Dr. Conrad Murray case. He finished by saying the Department shares in grieving the loss of Fire Department helicopter pilot Glen Smith. 

The Police Commission awarded the Police Commission Unit Citation to members of the Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad for their development in tools to combat terrorist attacks.

The verbal presentation and update from the Commanding Officer and Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) representative regarding community initiated problem solving, crime strategies, and other programs and goals within Harbor Area was given by Captain William Hayes. Captain Hayes informed the Board one of the big accomplishments of the past year was the development of the “Lock It or Lose It” campaign.  The continued development of the Teen C-PAB has also been a goal with outreach to LAUSD students.  The Teen C-PAB will be holding a Young Women’s Violence Prevention Conference set for May of 2012.  Lastly the Harbor C-PAB is holding an event called “Helping Badge” on December 18. 

The Department’s report, dated October 28, 2011, relative to the Ethics Enforcement Section quarterly report, third quarter, 2011, was approved.
