Changes at L.A. Board of Police Commissioners

Department's Reaction to Changes at L.A. Board of Police Commissioners

Los Angeles: The LAPD remains committed to civilian oversight, which is the cornerstone of "community-based" policing. Outgoing Police Commission Vice President Mathew Johnson and incoming nominee Eileen M. Decker are shining examples of that commitment in action. As a Police Commissioner, Johnson was pivotal in expanding the Department's use of less lethal tools, implementing our body worn video cameras and release of that footage, as well as supporting LAPD's work in de-escalation. While Johnson's leadership on the board will be missed, Mayor Eric Garcetti's new Police Commission nominee will no doubt pick up where he left off. Eileen M. Decker's depth of experience as a U.S. Attorney and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety will be an invaluable addition to the Board of Police Commissioners. LAPD Chief Michel Moore said, "The Police Commission is a crucial component to building trust with the residents we serve, and I look forward to strengthening that bond with Ms. Decker's partnership."
