El Sereno: Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved-Shooting in which officers shot a man armed with a handgun.

On August 18, 2019, around 11:25 p.m., uniformed officers assigned to Hollenbeck Area were assigned to a crime suppression detail in the area of E. Alhambra Avenue and N. Lombardy Boulevard in a marked black and white Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). As the officers were approaching a red traffic light, southbound Lombardy Boulevard at Alhambra Avenue, the suspect fired one round at the officers. The round struck the driver's door of their SUV. The suspect ran north from the location and into an alley just north of Alhambra Avenue. The officers made a U-Turn and then attempted to locate the suspect as they requested help and began to establish a perimeter. Believing the suspect would exit the alley at Belleglade Avenue, the officers drove west on Ithaca Avenue and then south on Belleglade Avenue to Alhambra Avenue. As they reached the intersection of Belleglade Avenue and Alhambra Avenue, the officers observed the suspect on the north sidewalk of Alhambra Avenue. The officers exited their vehicle and the suspect fired at them again resulting in an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS). The suspect then turned and fled east on Alhambra Avenue, where he confronted additional officers who were responding to the help call, resulting in a second OIS.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken into custody. Los Angeles Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedics responded and transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was treated for a yet undetermined number of gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead.

No officers were injured during this incident and a handgun was recovered at scene.

LAPD's specialized Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. Representatives from the Office of the Inspector General and Los Angeles County District Attorney's Justice System Integrity Division responded and monitored the investigation.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with the LAPD's policies and procedures. Additionally, representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office who responded to the scene will review the subsequent FID investigation; evidence collected and witness statements to determine if the force used by the officer(s) violated any criminal laws.
