Notes from the June 14, 2011 Weekly Police Commission Meeting

•    Police Commission Vice President Alan Skobin said he went on a ride along with officers from Hollywood Area Division.  He said it was very exciting and he was very impressed with the strategic deployment when the nightclubs let out.

•    Police Commissioner Robert Saltzman, along with fellow Commissioner Richard Drooyan and Police Commission Executive Director Richard Tefank, attended the graduation at California State University, Los Angeles where Police Commission President John Mack was awarded an honorary degree in Humane Letters.  Commissioner Saltzman also participated in the Los Angeles Pride Parade held in West Hollywood over the weekend.  He added there were a number of officers in attendance and they were well received.

•    Police Commissioner Drooyan echoed the sentiments of Commissioner Saltzman in saying Commission President John Mack was well deserving of the honor and added it was a wonderful ceremony.

•    Police Chief Charlie Beck provided an update on the financial disclosure issue as it relates to the gang units in the Department.  Chief Beck informed the Board there are currently 494 officers assigned to gang units throughout the City.  The ideal amount would be 630 officers which puts the units 14% below where he would want them to be but still above minimum requirements.  The Chief added 77th, Northeast, and Van Nuys Area Divisions were the three divisions that were not up to ideal levels but said they are still doing very well in terms of gang crime numbers.

•    The Department’s report, dated January 28, 2011, and Inspector General’s report, dated May 26, 2011, relative to the Ethics Enforcement Section quarterly report, fourth quarter 2010, were approved.

•    The Department’s report, dated June 14, 2011, relative to destruction of obsolete original records, was approved and transmitted to the City Clerk, Records Management Officer.
